The first-generation Acura 1.6EL (MB4) compact sedan was produced from 1996 to 2000 exclusively for the Canadian market.
Launched in 1996 for the 1997 model year, the first-generation Acura 1.6EL (MB4 chassis) was an entry-luxury sedan sold exclusively in Canada. Based on the sixth-generation Honda Civic sedan platform, the 1.6EL featured revised front and rear styling, improved soundproofing, and a richer suite of standard power accessories. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.
Powering the 1.6EL was a 1.6-liter D16Y8 four-cylinder VTEC engine producing 127 horsepower, available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. A minor refresh for 1999 updated the headlight clusters and bumper mesh. The 1.6EL achieved strong sales success, consistently representing Acura's top seller in Canada. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
