Ford's New EcoBoost Mustang: A Dark Horse with Factory Upgrades

Ford's Latest Mustang: The RTR

At the 2025 Detroit Auto Show, Ford showcased not one, but two impressive Mustangs. Alongside the Mustang GTD Spirit of America, the spotlight was on the new Mustang RTR. Unlike previous RTR models, this one will not be an aftermarket upfit done by Vaugh Gittin Jr.'s tuning company. Instead, it will be built directly by Ford at the Mustang plant in Michigan.

An EcoBoost Beast

The new Mustang RTR is not your typical V-8 muscle car. It's powered by an EcoBoost engine, described by Gittin Jr. as the most advanced and enjoyable Mustang EcoBoost to date. The car shown in camo wrap is a prototype, but Ford has revealed some features it borrows from the Mustang Dark Horse, such as massive Brembo brakes, an anti-lag turbo system, and RTR-specific exterior elements like the grille.

Innovation in Mustang

According to Joe Bellino, Mustang Brand Manager, Ford is committed to providing Mustang customers with the tools they need for fast and fun driving. This collaboration with RTR goes beyond previous partnerships and donor cars. For the first time in Ford's history, a high-performance vehicle will be co-created with an outside company and built in-house.

Vaughn Gittin Jr., President and Founder of RTR, expressed his excitement for the project, claiming that the new Mustang RTR is a pure source of accessible fun. With enhancements from the Mustang Dark Horse, the Mustang EcoBoost's exceptional weight distribution, and RTR's signature styling, this car is built for drifting, drag racing, back-road cruising, or ripping around an autocross track – ready to rock!

2025 Ford Mustang RTR Prototype

If you're eager to see the finished product, Ford has not yet disclosed the official release date. However, you can catch a glimpse of the prototype at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show from January 11-20.
