Tesla schedules livestreamed reveal of the electric Roadster for October 15
Tesla has announced plans to livestream an event on X this Thursday evening, putting the long-delayed second-generation Roadster back in the public eye. Originally unveiled in November 2017, the electric sports car was slated to enter production in 2020, but the project suffered multiple postponements over nearly nine years, leaving reservation holders waiting for deliveries.
The upcoming presentation represents a crucial milestone for the electric vehicle manufacturer. When the prototype first debuted, Tesla made bold performance claims for the tri-motor, four-seat sports car with its removable roof. Specifications included a 0-to-60-mph acceleration time of 1.9 seconds, 0-to-100 mph in 4.2 seconds, a top speed exceeding 250 mph, a quarter-mile run in 8.9 seconds, and a highway range of 620 miles supported by a 200-kWh battery pack.
In addition to the standard setup, Tesla discussed an optional SpaceX package equipped with cold-gas thrusters, which was projected to lower the 0-to-60-mph time to 1.1 seconds or potentially under one second. Elon Musk previously described the intense acceleration as the least interesting aspect of the vehicle, hinting at other unconventional engineering features.
The demonstration was originally scheduled for October 1, but harsh weather conditions and high winds in Texas forced a postponement because the event requires an outdoor setting. This explanation sparked further speculation regarding whether Tesla plans to demonstrate the thruster system or dynamic performance.
The livestream is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, at 7:55 p.m. Central Time (8:55 p.m. Eastern Time / 12:55 a.m. GMT on October 16). Industry observers and customers are watching to see if Tesla will showcase an updated design, confirm finalized specifications and pricing, and establish a realistic production and delivery timeline.
