Smart Reveals the 2027 #2 Electric City Car With 180 Miles of Range
At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Smart unveiled the new 2027 Smart #2, reviving the brand's roots as an electric two-seater exactly thirty years after introducing its original city car concept in the same city. Amidst an industry increasingly dominated by large and heavy SUVs, the new model offers a truly compact alternative designed specifically for crowded urban environments.
Measuring 2,746 millimeters (108.1 inches) in length—or 2,764 millimeters (108.8 inches) for the Couture Edition—the Smart #2 features an ultra-tight curb-to-curb turning circle of 6.95 meters (22.8 feet). Penned by Mercedes, the design maintains wheels pushed to the corners, a two-tone exterior, an updated Tridion Cell Evo safety cell, and a signature split tailgate where the rear glass opens independently from the lower hatch.
Underneath, the city car rides on a newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). A rear-mounted electric motor generates 80 horsepower and 130 Newton-meters (96 pound-feet) of torque, sent to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. The two-seater accelerates from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 11.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h). Thanks to its lightweight construction, the vehicle weighs 1,140 kilograms (2,513 pounds) and features a class-first five-link rear suspension.
Energy is stored in a low-mounted 35.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, delivering a WLTP range of up to 180 miles (290 kilometers) with an energy consumption rating of 13.6 kWh/100 km (3.0 mi/kWh). DC fast charging peaks at 65 kW, charging from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes, while 11-kW AC charging takes three hours. The entry-level Pure trim comes with a 7.4-kW single-phase onboard charger. The car also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.
The interior includes bench-style seating, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, an 8.8-inch driver display, and a Smart Pillar accessory mount. Trunk space measures 305 liters, expanding to 527 liters. Standard safety systems include seven airbags, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot detection, traffic-sign recognition, highway assistance, parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
The lineup consists of Pure, Pure+, Premium, and a limited Couture Edition capped at 999 units. The Couture Edition adds heated seats and steering wheel, a glass roof, 16-inch wheels with gold accents, 256-color ambient lighting, a Sennheiser audio system, matte white paint with a gold roof, and an individually numbered badge. Prices start just under €20,000 in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, and Portugal, rising to roughly €25,500 for the Couture Edition. Built in China under the 50:50 Mercedes-Benz and Geely joint venture formed in 2019, the Smart #2 launches in Europe in the first half of 2027.
