Renault Secures Over 1,000 Orders for Limited-Run 5 Turbo 3E Electric Hot Hatch
Renault has already secured orders for more than half of the planned production run of its high-performance electric hot hatch, the 5 Turbo 3E. Despite a steep starting price of €160,000 (approximately $180,000), over 1,000 buyers have placed reservations for the radical model.
The French manufacturer capped total production at exactly 1,980 examples, paying tribute to 1980—the debut year of the original mid-engine Renault 5 Turbo. Florent Ingargiola, the vehicle's product leader, confirmed the order milestone to British publication Piston Heads at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, where Renault showcased the model in new paint schemes ahead of opening customer configurations.
While the base car commands six figures, customized variants are reaching supercar-level price tags. Renault CEO François Provost noted that fully tailored examples could exceed €350,000 (close to $393,000). To support the extensive bespoke program covering exterior finishes, cabin upholstery, and trim, Renault established two dedicated customer consultation studios in the Paris area. The full personalization program will launch in mid-2027, with the first vehicle deliveries slated for 2028 following completion of development and homologation.
Technically, the 5 Turbo 3E diverges sharply from the front-wheel-drive Renault 5 E-Tech road car. It utilizes an aggressive rear-wheel-drive configuration powered by two in-wheel electric motors on the rear axle. Together, they generate 555 horsepower, propelling the lightweight hatchback to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 3.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h).
Energy is supplied by a 70-kWh battery pack offering an estimated WLTP driving range of more than 249 miles (400 kilometers). Built on an 800-volt architecture, the system supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, enabling a 15-to-80-percent recharge in roughly 15 minutes. The model's commercial success has fueled Renault's interest in developing further niche electric sports models in the future.
