Range Rover Sport EV Preview: Land Rover's Luxury SUV Goes Silent
The electric Range Rover Sport is nearing its official reveal, and visually it stays very close to the gasoline model. Rather than chasing a futuristic makeover, Land Rover has chosen a familiar design approach, with only subtle EV cues such as a sealed grille and the absence of exhaust outlets.
Under the skin, the SUV shares its Modular Longitudinal Architecture with the standard Range Rover Sport and the larger Range Rover. That platform was engineered to support conventional engines, plug-in hybrids, and full battery-electric setups, giving Land Rover a flexible base for its expanding lineup.
Power will come from two electric motors, with output expected to be either 444 hp or 542 hp depending on the trim. Torque is listed at 627 lb-ft (850 Nm), and the setup should provide an even split of power between the front and rear axles. Energy storage comes from a 118.5-kWh battery pack, which is substantial, though still smaller than some rivals' largest batteries.
Land Rover says the Range Rover Sport EV should be capable of roughly 330 miles on the EPA cycle, with WLTP numbers likely to be higher. Charging should be quick as well, thanks to an 800-volt system and support for 350-kW DC fast charging.
The newcomer will also keep the brand's comfort and capability focus intact. Air suspension is expected to deliver a smooth ride, while off-road ability remains part of the package. A one-pedal driving function will even be available for low-speed trail use, and rear-wheel steering should help with maneuverability and high-speed stability.
Inside, the cabin is expected to closely follow the regular Range Rover Sport, which means premium materials but also a heavily digital layout and plenty of glossy trim. Land Rover will fully unveil the electric Sport later this year, and it will join the range rather than replace the existing gasoline, diesel, or plug-in hybrid versions.
