Defender Dakar Concept: Street-Legal Rally SUV Revealed

Land Rover’s Defender brand has revealed the Defender Dakar Design Preview, a nearly production-ready concept car previewing a limited-edition, street-legal rally racer arriving next year. The project is based on the Dakar Rally–winning Defender D7X-R, which was developed from the Defender Octa to comply with Dakar regulations requiring stock body, chassis, engine, and mounting points.

While the competition truck required extra rear dampers and stiffer springs to handle a 145-gallon fuel tank and gear, the road-going version adopts a simpler, robust suspension setup. It replaces the Octa's air springs and hydraulic dampers with Bilstein gas dampers and coil springs. The Defender Dakar rides on 21-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires, providing an estimated 14.6 inches of ground clearance—an increase of 1.9 inches over the stock Octa in its highest suspension setting—while maintaining similar wheel travel.

Under the hood, the Defender Dakar retains the BMW-sourced 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine tuned to the Octa’s full 626 horsepower, up from the 400 hp detuned race spec. Torque is rated at 553 lb-ft compared to 590 lb-ft in the Octa. New electronic features include Dunes and Gravel drive modes, enhanced underbody skid plates, and an Airborne Detection system derived from the rally car to ensure soft landings after jumps.

The exterior gains aggressive rally upgrades, including wide fender flares for the 35-inch tires, a roof-mounted LED light bar, a carbon-fiber hood, and modified carbon-fiber desert air intakes. The glass sunroof has been replaced with a fixed metal roof, and the exterior spare tire mount on the tailgate has been eliminated. Inside, the cabin features custom racing seats prepared for four-point harnesses, a heavily bolstered two-place rear bench, dedicated helmet compartments, an onboard air compressor, and an internal spare tire carrier.

The model will be offered in several colors, including a Dakar Sand livery with a Yanbu Turquoise roof. Land Rover will reveal pricing, technical specifications, and open reservations during the 2027 Dakar Rally in January.
