Mercedes C-Class Refresh Brings a More Powerful Mild-Hybrid Setup

Mercedes-Benz has given the C-Class a thorough update, and the changes go well beyond styling tweaks. A new illuminated front end, revised lighting signatures, and a more high-tech interior are part of the package, but the bigger story is under the skin: stronger electrified engines, a more capable plug-in hybrid, and a broader set of driver-assist features.

For shoppers who are not ready to switch to the fully electric C-Class sedan, this facelift keeps the traditional model competitive. It adds more performance from the hybrid system, improves efficiency, and brings the car closer to Mercedes’ latest digital and safety tech.

Powertrain Updates and Electric Support

The most notable mechanical change is a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Output rises to 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, while an integrated starter-generator can contribute an extra 23 horsepower and 151 lb-ft for smoother acceleration and better low-speed response.

Mercedes is also extending electrification across the broader combustion lineup with revised gasoline and diesel engines, all using second-generation 48-volt technology. In some markets, diesel versions remain available and can run on higher biofuel blends, helping the C-Class stay compliant with future emissions requirements without abandoning internal combustion.

For drivers wanting more electric-only capability, the C 400 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid combines a 100-kW motor with a 19.53-kWh battery. In Europe, Mercedes says it can travel up to 62 miles on electricity alone, which should cover many daily trips without using fuel.

Exterior Changes, Cabin Tech, and Assistance Systems

On the outside, the facelift introduces a lighted grille, updated headlamps with star-themed daytime running lights, and redesigned bumpers and taillights. New color choices such as Miami Silver Metallic and Moody Sky Grey Metallic help give the sedan a fresher appearance.

The interior has also been modernized with a more powerful version of Mercedes-Benz Operating System, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and an 11.9-inch central touchscreen. The MBUX Virtual Assistant can carry on longer conversations and answer broader questions, while the MB.DRIVE assistance package uses eight cameras, five radar units, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to support functions like adaptive cruise control, lane assistance, and parking aid.

Other useful upgrades include rear-axle steering, which can angle the rear wheels by up to 2.5 degrees and reduce the turning circle to 34.9 feet. Optional Digital Light headlights with micro-LED technology are also available, offering a wider beam pattern while using less energy.

The refreshed combustion-powered C-Class will reach Europe first, with U.S. sales expected in the first half of 2027. Mercedes has already shown the electric C-Class sedan separately, including a version with up to 474 miles of WLTP range from a 94.0-kWh battery and an 800-volt setup.

Overall, this update keeps the C-Class relevant for buyers who still want a gasoline or diesel sedan, but with more electrification, more technology, and a stronger bridge between traditional power and Mercedes’ electric future.
