Citroën Debuts Sub-2,200-Pound 2CV Electric Concept at Paris Motor Show for 2028 Production
At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Citroën announced the return of the iconic 2CV with the debut of the all-electric 2CV Concept, which is scheduled to enter production by 2028. Rather than simply creating a modern replica of the historical car, Citroën's design team sought to envision an electric small car for the future while retaining the core identity, practicality, versatility, and cheerful character that made the original model so beloved in Europe.
The upcoming electric 2CV is targeted to carry an estimated starting price of around 15,000 euros (approximately $16,730). While Citroën has not yet disclosed official horsepower or driving range figures, the company stated its goal of keeping the vehicle simple, clever, and light, aiming for a curb weight of under 2,200 pounds. Defying the industry trend of ever-growing vehicle footprints, the new 2CV is expected to measure just 148 inches in length, making it shorter than the final production version of the original 2CV and roughly 5 inches shorter than the Fiat 500e.
On the outside, the concept blends unmistakable retro cues with modern styling in an Infra Red finish. The front end features sculpted bodywork, pronounced fenders, and round headlights accented by arched LEDs. Large wheel arches house 19-inch steel wheels with white hubcaps wrapped in Michelin tires. Along the profile, a high beltline creates compact window openings, complemented by small door handles inspired by the classic 2CV. At the rear, a contrasting black tailgate is flanked by slim LED taillights and features an old-school handle.
Inside the cabin, Citroën maximized passenger space by eliminating the traditional center console and fitting slim door panels, allowing for bench seats in both the front and second rows. In place of a fixed console, a removable storage basket is provided that can be taken along for picnics. The conventional dashboard has been replaced by a cylindrical unit housing the steering wheel, gear selector, and a square 8-inch touchscreen, while a driver information display sits tucked between the dash area and the windshield. A detachable speaker is positioned in front of the front passenger. Additional interior highlights include a removable fabric roof, string lights lining the ceiling instead of standard dome lights, fabric strap door handles, and bright yellow color accents.
The new Citroën 2CV is not expected to be offered in the United States, as it is tailored primarily for European drivers navigating shorter distances and stricter emissions regulations at an accessible price point.
