Subaru Hints at Launching a Fresh Performance Edition: Could It Be the Next STI?

For years, Subaru aficionados have been curious about the potential return of the WRX STI or the introduction of a new hatchback model. This speculation intensified after the last STI was discontinued in the US in 2021.

While hints of a new STI or similar models have surfaced sporadically since then, concrete details remained elusive. Recently, Subaru has fueled excitement by hinting at a high-performance version of the WRX, which might finally be the awaited performance model enthusiasts have been eager for.

Official Confirmation at Fuji Speedway

During a media briefing related to the Super Taikyu series at Fuji Speedway, Subaru's Executive Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer, Tetsuro Fujinuki, affirmed the development of a new performance model slated for this year's Japan Mobility Show. According to Japan's Car Watch, this could potentially be a new iteration of the WRX or the STI, though specifics remain under wraps.

Speculations and Design Insights

A single teaser image has been released, giving a sneak peek of the anticipated performance model. The front end appears to be based on the current WRX design, possibly featuring an extended roofline. This has led to speculation about whether it will be a WRX hatchback or a novel high-performance version of the Levorg. Only time will tell.

Looking Ahead

Fujinuki mentioned that the upcoming model will leverage Subaru's existing technological strengths and expressed a desire to develop an even more advanced vehicle in the future. He also indicated that more information regarding Subaru's future performance strategies will be unveiled at the October Japan Mobility Show.

Meanwhile, in the US market, consumers will have to continue choosing from the current WRX and WRX tS sedans, which offer up to 271 horsepower in their most powerful configurations. There have been discussions about all-electric versions of Subaru's STI performance models, but given the evolving automotive landscape, it's uncertain whether Subaru will proceed with that direction.
