BMW Launches iX3 as the Maiden Neue Klasse Edition, Set to Arrive This Year

BMW is undergoing a significant transformation. While the introduction of Neue Klasse vehicles is on the horizon, this initiative represents just a fraction of the company's comprehensive strategy to refresh its vehicle lineup. During the 2025 Annual Conference, BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse revealed intentions to roll out over 40 new or updated models within the next two years.

The journey starts in September with the unveiling of the new iX3. Positioned next to a hidden prototype, Zipse confirmed that this electric SUV will be the first Neue Klasse model to enter production.

"The designs currently hidden under camouflage cloth will be revealed at the IAA Mobility event in Munich in early September," he announced. "At that time, we will present the production version that customers can purchase.
I can share one important detail now: the vehicle will debut as the BMW iX3. This continues the successful legacy of our first fully electric BMW X model, which has been beloved by fans globally since 2020."

It's crucial to recognize that BMW Group's portfolio also includes Mini and Rolls-Royce, meaning not all of the 40-plus models will bear the BMW name. Nevertheless, BMW remains the flagship brand, contributing 2.2 million out of the group's 2.4 million global sales in 2024. The Neue Klasse series, with its distinct design departure from existing models, is set to be a cornerstone of the company's future offerings.

"Never before has BMW invested so heavily in its future," stated Walter Mertl, BMW Group's CFO. "Our 2024 investments reached unprecedented levels, as planned. This highlights the robustness of our strategy and our unwavering commitment to its execution."

BMW's aggressive expansion occurs amidst challenging conditions for most automakers outside China. Market instability in the United States coupled with the swift growth of Chinese brands has created considerable turbulence. These two markets are the largest globally, with China's domestic industry securing a significant share locally. In the US, unpredictable tariff policies under President Trump's administration complicate long-term strategic planning.

Additionally, BMW faces the task of future product development. While global EV sales for BMW have risen by 13.5% in 2024, market trends indicate that consumers are not yet fully embracing electric vehicles. To address this, BMW is also investing in advanced combustion engines designed to comply with stringent European emission standards.

The company's ambitions are vast, especially in light of a 33% drop in profits last year, making the upcoming years critical. Nonetheless, BMW appears committed to its comprehensive strategy.

"We are making a monumental advance with our new technology clusters—maximizing scalability, boosting innovation, and enhancing benefits for our customers," Zipse commented. "We are not limiting ourselves to specific segments or drivetrain technologies—we aim to equip every customer with the latest advancements."
