Audi Set to Reveal Its Latest A6 Sedan

Audi is taking an unconventional approach by introducing the new A6 Avant wagon before unveiling its sedan counterpart. The Avant made its appearance in early March, while the sedan is expected to be revealed next week with an official premiere on April 15. Early teaser photos already showcase a significant portion of the rear, hinting at a design familiar to fans of the Mercedes E-Class.

Modern Lighting Features

The preview images highlight the A6's cutting-edge OLED taillights. In 2025, Audi is equipping the next-generation sedan with a continuous LED strip across the rear, mirroring the Avant’s design. This feature not only enhances the visual appeal but also creates the illusion of a broader vehicle. Additionally, Audi is committing to authenticity by eliminating faux exhaust tips in the 2026 A6 and S6 models, ensuring a genuine exhaust setup.

Branding and Model Strategy

Interestingly, the new A6 badge nearly featured an “A7” logo. Audi had considered reclassifying the A6 series to A7 to distinguish between combustion and electric models, using odd numbers for traditional engines and even numbers for electric versions. However, this approach was abandoned less than two years after its announcement.

For enthusiasts of the traditional sedan silhouette, there is disappointing news: Audi will no longer produce the A7 Sportback. The sleek five-door variant of the A6 will not continue into the next generation. Adding to the confusion, Ingolstadt's lineup includes a long-wheelbase A7 sedan sold exclusively in China.

Powertrain Options

The engine lineup for the new A6 Sedan mirrors that of the Avant. The base model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine delivering 201 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. A more robust 3.0-liter V6 variant offers 362 hp and 406 lb-ft. Diesel options include a 2.0 TDI engine producing 201 hp and 295 lb-ft. The forthcoming RS6 will remain available only as an Avant, potentially featuring a V-8 engine with possible electrification to meet stricter emission standards.

Enhanced Dimensions and Aerodynamics

With each new generation, the A6 sedan is expected to grow in size. The Avant has been extended by 2.3 inches to reach a length of 196.4 inches, while maintaining a similar wheelbase and width to its predecessor. Audi claims that the extended roofline makes the Avant their most aerodynamic combustion engine wagon ever, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.25. Consequently, the sedan is anticipated to feature an equally streamlined body design.

The new sedan will retain the elements that fans appreciate in the Avant, adding a touch more elegance while slightly compromising on practicality. The Avant is already available in Europe, with deliveries starting in late May. The sedan is projected to enter the market by the end of 2025, although availability in the United States might be delayed until the following year.
