Subaru Legacy Outback Honors 30 Years in Japan with STI Enhancements

The Subaru Legacy-derived Outback is marking its 30th anniversary in Japan, but its retirement is also on the horizon. This commemorative edition receives significant enhancements from Subaru Tecnica International (STI), ensuring that the wagon goes out with a bang.

The key highlight of the Legacy Outback 30th Anniversary Edition is the STI-tuned Hitachi Astemo SFRD front dampers, which add a sportier edge to the suspension without compromising on ride quality. The rear dampers have also been tweaked for improved performance.

To distinguish this special edition from the standard Legacy Outback, Subaru has adorned it with striking black accents throughout its rugged exterior. The matte black finish wheels and blacked-out badges further enhance its unique appearance. Inside, the cabin features leather upholstery with an embroidered silver logo celebrating the 30th anniversary.

Subaru plans to produce only 500 units of the Legacy Outback 30th Anniversary Edition and is currently accepting orders until November 10th. If the demand exceeds the supply, the company will resort to a lottery system to determine the fortunate buyers. With the order books set to close in late March 2025, time is running out to secure one of these limited edition wagons in Japan.

The Future of Legacy Outback

While the Legacy Outback bids farewell in Japan, it continues to thrive in the United States. The sixth-generation model, introduced in 2019, has seen a 2.8% increase in deliveries by reaching 126,333 units as of September 2024. Unfortunately, the same success does not extend to its sedan counterpart, as the demand for the Legacy has plummeted by 25.4% in the first nine months of this year, resulting in 14,642 cars sold. The Outback remains significantly more popular, outselling the Legacy by eight and a half times. Subaru plans to end production of the Legacy sedan after the 2025 model year.
