Dodge Unveils Electric Charger to Counter 'Self-Driving Sleep Pods'
Dodge's Unique Approach
Dodge is determined to emphasize that its new electric Charger stands apart from other EVs. In a recent social media campaign, the company claimed that the revamped fastback will save the world from the invasion of 'soulless, self-driving sleep pods' that pollute the streets.
With 670 combined horsepower from a dual-motor powertrain, the Charger Daytona stakes its claim as the most powerful muscle car globally, as declared by Dodge. Remarkably, the company seems genuine in its claims.
The Controversy
While there are indeed other electric vehicles with dual-motor setups that surpass 670 horsepower, whether they qualify as muscle cars remains a debatable topic. However, Dodge's intention is evident. At the Charger Daytona debut earlier this year, former CEO Tim Kuniskis stressed that the purpose of the Charger EV was not to offer an eco-friendly performance vehicle. With the optional Scat Pack, which is required to reach the mentioned 670 hp, the range is limited to 260 miles. Moreover, the sound of the vehicle underwent multiple revisions to achieve a classic V-8 rumble.
The Challenge
Will buyers embrace the Charger Daytona as an electric muscle car that saves us from 'soulless' EVs? The social media comments on Charger Daytona posts suggest that it may be a tough sell. Dodge seems to share this perception, as the combustion-powered Charger Sixpack, initially planned for a late 2025 release, has been expedited to arrive in early summer. However, with the official discontinuation of the Hemi V-8, it remains uncertain how well the model will be received. Instead, it will feature a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, producing either 420 or 550 hp.
The Transition and Future
Meanwhile, Dodge is gradually phasing out its current Charger models. Sales have predictably declined amidst the transition, exacerbated by the unavailability of the electric Charger Daytona as we approach the end of 2024, which was originally scheduled for release last summer.
It seems that the project of saving the world will have to wait until next year.
