Chevrolet Declares Production of Bolt EV
Chevrolet has declared about its plans to manufacture the Bolt EV at the Orion Assembly plant near Detroit.
The Bolt EV concept was presented at NAIAS in January. The rumours about the possibility of its production emerged shortly after. Now Chevrolet confirmed that they will produce the next generation EV. The manufacturer decided to build it as a response to customers willing to obtain a production version. The President of GM North America, Alan Batey, says that the vehicle has the potential to change the present posture of affairs with electric cars.
The starting price will be near $30,000 for a fully electric car. The vehicle will be able to provide an estimated range of 200 miles (or 332 km). General Motors is going to invest $160 million in the Orion Assembly plant for getting it prepared for the Bolt. At the same time the Pontiac Metal Centre facility will get $40 million for equipment and tools.
There are no any other details at the moment, but the automaker says that they will give more information soon. The Bolt is believed to come out in production in October of 2016. It is also said to be based on GM’s Gamma small vehicle global platform. The last will also become a base for the Sonic of the next generation which is scheduled to join the assembly line in the second part of the next year. There are rumours that Vauxhall and Opel will receive their own variants of the Bolt, but there is no official information about the issue yet.
