Chevrolet Limits Multi-Flex Tailgate to Three Silverado Trims for 2027
Just a few years ago, multifunctional tailgates became a major battleground among American pickup manufacturers. Ford rolled out the Pro Access tailgate, Ram introduced its split Multifunction tailgate, and Chevrolet launched the multi-position Multi-Flex system. While all three setups remain on the market, some are becoming significantly harder to acquire.
For the 2027 model year, Chevrolet is drastically limiting the availability of the Multi-Flex tailgate across the Silverado 1500 lineup. According to reporting from GM Authority, the feature will now be offered on just three trim levels: Trail Boss, High Country, and the off-road-focused ZR2. In addition to being restricted to fewer models, the option is also becoming more expensive when not fitted as standard equipment.
During the 2026 model year, Chevrolet made the Multi-Flex tailgate available across the majority of the Silverado 1500 range for $445 as an option, while the ZR2 included it from the factory. For 2027, the standalone option price increases to $595 on both Trail Boss and High Country trims, marking a $150 bump. The ZR2 remains the only grade where the multifunctional gate comes standard.
The reduced availability aligns with a broader restructuring of the Silverado lineup for 2027. The revised range now consists of seven distinct trim levels: Work Truck, Custom, Silverado, Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, ZR2, and High Country.
The Multi-Flex tailgate earned praise for its practical versatility. It functions as a standard tailgate, serves as a load stop for long cargo items, facilitates closer reach into the bed, and converts into an elevated work surface. Furthermore, the inner section folds down into a full-width entry step capable of supporting up to 375 pounds.
The restricted tailgate availability comes alongside a full redesign of the 2027 Silverado 1500. The updated truck features revised exterior styling, an overhauled interior, a new generation of small-block V8 engines, and retains both the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel and updated 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder. Interior technology receives a substantial upgrade as well, highlighted by a standard 16.3-inch infotainment display and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, with higher trims offering an optional 11.5-inch passenger screen and trailer-capable Super Cruise. However, buyers looking for the flexible tailgate will face significantly fewer choices.
