VW CEO Reconfirms Midsize SUV for US Market

VW is still committed to take a mid-size SUV to the North American market, in an effort to present a fresh high-volume car to the company.

Martin Winterkorn, VW CEO, announced at a meeting of dealers that VW will “take initiative” in the mid-size SUV section, which is viewed as a crucial section by the automaker for US expansion. Winterkorn is targeting for 800,000 models sold each year by 2018, around double the number of VW’s delivered in 2012.

The SUV will be bigger than the Tiguan, and cost less than the Touareg, and will likely take most of its inspiration from the CrossBlue Concept. The CrossBlue was presented at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show, sporting seating for 7 and an impressive diesel-hybrid powertrain. The fresh SUV may also sample from the CrossCoupe Concept, a smaller, coupe-based SUV similar to the Range Rover Evoque.
