The first-generation Volkswagen Tiguan (Typ 5N) debuted at the September 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its name blends 'Tiger' and 'Iguana'. Underpinned by the PQ35 compact platform shared with the Golf V, it came with either front-wheel drive or Haldex-based 4Motion all-wheel drive. Trim levels included city-focused Trend&Fun/Sport&Style and the off-road Track&Field trim with a steep 28-degree approach angle bumper.

Engine choices featured 1.4 TSI (122–160 hp) and 2.0 TSI (170–210 hp) turbocharged gasoline units, alongside 2.0 TDI Common Rail diesels (110–177 hp). Transmission options encompassed six-speed manual, six-speed torque-converter automatic, or seven-speed DSG gearboxes. A 2011 facelift updated the front grille and added LED daytime running lights.
