The Volkswagen Golf VII (Typ 5G) premiered in September 2012 at the Paris Motor Show. It served as a flagship showcase for the modular MQB platform, reducing vehicle weight by up to 100 kg while expanding passenger legroom, overall length, and luggage space. The body design took on crisp, geometric character lines, complemented by an angled center stack with touchscreens. It was built as a hatchback and a Variant wagon.

Engine choices were extensive: efficient 1.0 to 2.0-liter TSI units, Common Rail 1.6/2.0 TDI diesels, the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid, and the all-electric e-Golf offering up to 300 km of driving range. Performance GTI and Golf R trims boasted between 245 and 310 hp. The 2016 mid-cycle update (Mk7.5) introduced full LED headlights, dynamic indicators, and the Active Info Display digital instrument panel.
