The Volkswagen Golf VI (Typ 5K) arrived in 2008, styled under the oversight of Walter de Silva. Designed as a comprehensive refinement of the Mk5 chassis, it placed strong emphasis on cabin sound dampening, high-grade interior plastics, and optimized manufacturing ergonomics. The exterior adopted clean horizontal front grilles and LED tail lamps. Available variants comprised hatchbacks, the Variant wagon, and a soft-top Golf Cabriolet reintroduced in 2011.

All diesel engines (1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI) converted to Common Rail technology for quieter idling and improved efficiency. The gasoline lineup relied primarily on 1.2, 1.4, and 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged engines linked to 6- or 7-speed DSG transmissions. The flagship Golf R dropped the heavy VR6 engine in favor of a high-output 270 hp 2.0 TSI turbo-four with 4Motion. In 2009, it took the World Car of the Year award.
