The Volkswagen Golf V (Typ 1K) debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its major technical leap was switching to the new PQ35 platform, which introduced a fully independent multi-link rear suspension setup. This layout transformed ride comfort, stability, and vehicle dynamics compared to its predecessors. Body torsional stiffness expanded by 80%. Offerings included three-door and five-door hatchbacks alongside the Golf Variant wagon.

The Mk5 pioneered twincharged TSI gasoline engines (combining turbocharging and supercharging) and mainstreamed six- and seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearboxes. Powertrains spanned 1.4 to 2.0-liter FSI and TSI gasoline engines, a 3.2-liter VR6 in the R32, and 1.9/2.0-liter TDI diesels. The Golf GTI packed a 200 hp 2.0 TFSI engine that re-established standard performance metrics for hot hatchbacks.
