The first-generation Vauxhall Monterey was a rugged full-size body-on-frame sport utility vehicle produced as part of the General Motors alliance with Isuzu, serving as a rebadged variant of the acclaimed Isuzu Trooper. It was offered in two body styles: a compact three-door short-wheelbase version and a practical five-door long-wheelbase version designed for large families and heavy utility work. As the initial iteration carrying the Monterey nameplate in the British lineup, it introduced a heavy-duty platform with a robust ladder-frame chassis and part-time four-wheel drive equipped with low-range gearing. The powertrain lineup originally featured a 3.2-litre petrol V6 engine alongside a 3.1-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, matched with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. A comprehensive mid-cycle refresh arrived around 1998, bringing a redesigned front grille, updated headlamps, refreshed interior trim, and modernised engines such as the 3.0-litre DTI diesel and an enlarged 3.5-litre petrol V6. The Vauxhall-branded version was marketed specifically across the right-hand-drive market of the United Kingdom.
