The Toyota Sai (AZK10 chassis) compact luxury hybrid sedan debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009, targeted exclusively at the Japanese domestic market. Built on Toyota's New MC platform, the Sai shared its mechanical architecture with the Lexus HS 250h. The body was styled to optimize aerodynamic efficiency, achieving a low drag coefficient of 0.27. A key sustainability feature was the extensive use of plant-derived Ecological Plastics for interior cabin trim and trunk linings, replacing petroleum-based synthetic materials.
Powertrain duties were handled strictly by Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II). The setup combined an Atkinson-cycle 2.4-liter 2AZ-FXE four-cylinder gasoline engine (150 hp) with a 143-horsepower electric motor, delivering a combined total output of 190 horsepower managed by an eCVT. A major mid-cycle facelift in August 2013 completely transformed the exterior aesthetics, introducing a dramatic full-width LED headlight cluster, restyled taillights, and a refined dashboard console layout. Production of the Sai finished in 2017.
