The second generation Toyota Matrix debuted at the SEMA Show in late 2007 before entering production for the 2009 model year. Built on Toyota's updated E140/E150 Corolla platform, the vehicle adopted a lower, more aggressive hatchback profile with a sloping roofline, sharp headlamps, and sculpted side panels. The redesigned cabin offered upgraded sport bucket seats, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power accessories, and a durable rubberized cargo bay lining designed to transport outdoor sports gear and bulky cargo with ease.

Powertrain choices were divided across two engine options: a base 1.8-liter 2ZR-FE inline-four featuring Dual VVT-i outputting 132 horsepower, and a larger 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine delivering 158 horsepower fitted to the S and XRS trims. Transmissions included five-speed manual gearboxes along with four-speed and five-speed automatics. All-wheel drive (AWD) remained an option on the 2.4-liter S model. A mid-cycle refresh for 2011 brought revised front and rear bumpers, fresh alloy wheel designs, and standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) across the range.
