First generation Toyota Fortuner mid-size body-on-frame SUV built on the global IMV platform for markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
The first generation Toyota Fortuner was introduced in Thailand in December 2004 under Toyota's global IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) project. Built upon the rugged ladder-frame chassis of the Hilux pickup, the Fortuner featured a distinct five-door wagon body enclosing a three-row, seven-seat interior cabin. Unlike its pickup sibling, the rear suspension was engineered with a coil-spring live axle setup to enhance ride comfort and passenger refinement. The exterior projected a tough SUV stance defined by high ground clearance, bold body cladding, and flared wheel arches.
Engine offerings tailored for regional markets included 2.7-liter 2TR-FE four-cylinder and 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 gasoline units, alongside 2.5-liter 2KD-FTV and 3.0-liter 1KD-FTV D-4D common-rail turbodiesels. Transmission options comprised five-speed manual and four- or five-speed automatic gearboxes. Drive configurations offered both rear-wheel drive and full-time or part-time four-wheel drive equipped with a low-range transfer case and differential locks. Major cosmetic facelifts in 2008 and 2011 modernized the grille, headlamps, and interior infotainment systems.
