Unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the second-generation Suzuki SX4 (chassis code JY) was marketed as the SX4 S-Cross to emphasize its enlarged crossover profile. Dimensions grew substantially over its predecessor, expanding overall length to 4,300 mm and trunk capacity to 430 liters. Built on a new lightweight high-tensile steel platform, the SX4 introduced Suzuki's advanced AllGrip 4WD system, which offered four electronically controlled driving modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Lock to adjust torque distribution, throttle response, and traction control parameters.

Initial powertrain offerings included a 1.6-liter M16A atmospheric gasoline engine producing 117 hp and a 1.6-liter DDiS turbodiesel engine delivering 120 hp. A major facelift introduced in late 2016 brought an aggressive chrome front grille, redesigned LED headlamps, and increased ground clearance. The atmospheric engines were largely replaced by Boosterjet direct-injection turbocharged engines, specifically a 1.0-liter three-cylinder and a 1.4-liter four-cylinder unit. In 2020, Suzuki added a 48-volt Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) mild-hybrid system for European markets to comply with stricter emission standards.
