Produced from 2001 to 2007, the Suzuki Liana (an acronym for 'Life In A New Age', ER/RH series, sold in Japan and North America as the Aerio) replaced the Baleno. Offered in 5-door hatchback/tall-wagon and 4-door notchback sedan configurations, the Liana prioritized headroom and cabin space through its high-roof structure. Suspension featured independent MacPherson struts front and rear, while early models debuted a futuristic digital instrument cluster.

Engines included 1.3-liter (90 hp) and 1.6-liter (103-106 hp) M-series four-cylinders, alongside a 1.4-liter HDi turbodiesel for Europe and larger 2.0L/2.3L engines (up to 155 hp) for North America. Full-time viscous-coupling 4WD was optional. A 2004 refresh redesigned the front grille, bumpers, and interior, replacing digital gauges with conventional analog dials.
