The first generation Japanese 7-seater Subaru Domingo microvan was produced from 1983 to 1994.
Launched in Japan in October 1983, the first-generation Subaru Domingo (KJ series) enlarged the Sambar kei-van body frame to create an economical 7-passenger microvan. Its rear-mounted engine lineup included the 1.0-liter EF10 and 1.2-liter EF12 3-cylinder petrol engines. The MacPherson strut front suspension setup paired with the refined rear suspension layout struck an optimal balance between highway composure and smooth absorption of road surface imperfections. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Featuring three rows of seats with rotating mid-row chairs, it offered 5-speed manual gearboxes with push-button 4WD. A 1986 facelift restyled the front fascia with rectangular headlamps. Production ran through 1994. Inside, the cabin showcased durable trim materials, clear instrument cluster graphics, and intuitive control ergonomics that earned praise from automotive reviewers globally.
