Smart Forfour II (W453) gallery (2014–2021)
The second-generation Forfour returned to a rear-engine rear-wheel-drive format alongside the third-generation Fortwo.
Produced from 2014 through 2021 at Renault’s Revoz plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, the second-generation smart Forfour (W453) returned to the brand’s quintessential rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Co-developed with the Renault-Nissan Alliance alongside the Fortwo W453 and Renault Twingo III, it featured rear passenger doors that opened to an impressive 85-degree angle, greatly simplifying ingress and egress. The chassis combined a high-strength Tridion steel cell with compact packaging. Engine offerings included a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 71 hp and a 0.9-liter turbo producing 90 hp (or 109 hp for the Brabus variant), mated to a 5-speed manual or Getrag 6-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox. In 2017, smart launched the Forfour Electric Drive. Following a comprehensive visual facelift in late 2019, all petrol variants were discontinued globally, leaving the battery-electric smart EQ Forfour with an 82 hp motor as the sole configuration until assembly ceased in late 2021.
