The first-generation Pontiac GTO launched in 1964 as a high-performance option package for the intermediate Pontiac Tempest LeMans on GM's body-on-frame A-body platform before becoming an independent model line for 1966. Available body styles included a two-door hardtop coupe, a pillared sports coupe, and a two-door convertible. The initial powerplant was a 389 cubic-inch (6.4L) Pontiac V8 generating 325 to 335 horsepower with a single four-barrel carburetor, or up to 360 horsepower when equipped with the optional Tri-Power setup featuring three two-barrel Rochester carburetors. For the 1967 model year, the engine displacement was enlarged to 400 cubic inches (6.6L), producing up to 360 horsepower in Ram Air configuration. Transmissions included three-speed and four-speed Hurst manual gearboxes, as well as two-speed Super Turbine 300 and three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmissions. A major restyling in 1966 introduced sensual Coke-bottle contours, recessed rear windows, and vertically stacked headlights. The car was sold across North America.
