The first-generation MG GT was introduced in 2014 as a stylish compact sedan designed under SAIC Motor ownership, sharing its core underpinnings with the MG 5 hatchback and Roewe 350. It featured a distinctive fastback-inspired silhouette with a sloping roofline, a bold front grille, and an eye-catching full-width rear taillight assembly. The powertrain lineup included several petrol options: a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder generating 109 hp, a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit delivering 129 hp, and a modern 1.4-litre SGE direct-injection turbo engine producing 156 hp. Transmission choices consisted of five-speed or six-speed manual gearboxes, a six-speed torque-converter automatic, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for the flagship turbo engine. Inside, the cabin offered a driver-focused dashboard layout equipped with an advanced touchscreen infotainment system. While the domestic Chinese market represented the primary sales volume, the model was also exported to select overseas territories, catering to younger buyers looking for an affordable sporty compact sedan until production ended in 2019.
