The first-generation MG7 debuted in 2007 following Nanjing Automobile Group's (NAC) acquisition of the assets of the defunct British automaker MG Rover Group, before NAC was subsequently absorbed by SAIC Motor. The car was constructed on the carryover R40 platform inherited from the Rover 75 and MG ZT, retaining the front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link Z-Axle arrangement. The vehicle was sold exclusively as a four-door notchback sedan in two distinct wheelbases: the standard wheelbase variant retaining the sporty MG ZT front grille styling, and the long-wheelbase MG 7L variant stretched by 200 mm, styled after the luxurious Rover 75 Vanden Plas with a classic waterfall chrome grille. Under the bonnet, the MG7 offered a modernized 1.8-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine from the N-Series family (an evolved Rover K-Series) producing around 160 hp, alongside a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre KV6 petrol engine delivering approximately 184 hp. Transmission duties were handled by either a 5-speed manual gearbox or an Aisin 5-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Throughout its lifespan until discontinuation around 2013, the car underwent minor interior trim updates and electronic revisions. It was predominantly sold in the Chinese domestic market, positioned as an executive sports sedan combining British heritage, comfortable road manners, and premium equipment.
