About this generation

Second generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W164), introducing unibody construction, sleek aerodynamics, AIRMATIC air suspension, and 7G-TRONIC automatic.

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class (chassis code W164) premiered in early 2005. Switching from body-on-frame to a lightweight unibody structure significantly improved torsional rigidity, highway driving dynamics, and crash safety. The design presented a sports-oriented stance with flared wheel arches and forward-leaning C-pillars.

Engine offerings featured 3.0-liter V6 and 4.0-liter V8 turbodiesels alongside 3.5-liter V6 and 5.5-liter V8 gasoline units. The flagship ML 63 AMG packed a high-revving 510-hp 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8. All engines mated to the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic with column-mounted Direct Select controls. Optional Off-Road Pro package provided a two-speed transfer case and rear locking differential. A 2008 refresh added redesigned bumpers and headlights.
