About this generation

First generation compact executive sedan Mercedes-Benz 190 (W201), produced from 1982 to 1993 as the iconic predecessor of the C-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz W201, marketed commercially as the 190 series, was launched in November 1982 as the brand's first compact executive sedan, quickly gaining global fame as the 'Baby-Benz'. Designed under the aesthetic guidance of Bruno Sacco, the W201 introduced a timeless wedge-shaped aerodynamic silhouette boasting a drag coefficient of 0.33. The model set new automotive engineering benchmarks by introducing a patented multi-link independent rear suspension setup (Raumlenkerachse), which delivered unparalleled cornering stability, ride compliance, and crash protection for its era.

Engine choices encompassed M102 inline-four gasoline engines (1.8L to 2.3L), the smooth M103 2.6-liter inline-six, and exceptionally durable OM601/OM602 diesel variants (190 D). Motorsport prestige was established by the high-performance 190 E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 homologation specials equipped with Cosworth 16-valve cylinder heads, which spawned the legendary Evolution I and Evolution II DTM championship race cars. Transmissions included four- or five-speed manual gearboxes and a four-speed automatic. A 1988 mid-cycle update introduced protective body-side cladding ('Sacco planks') and refined interior ergonomics before production ended in 1993.
