The second-generation Lexus IS (XE20) debuted in 2005 with sleek L-finesse lines, V6 powertrains, diesel options, and the IS C convertible.

The second-generation Lexus IS sports sedan (chassis code XE20) debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005. Designed using Lexus's L-finesse theme, it achieved a drag coefficient of 0.27. Interior features included SmartAccess push-button start, Optitron electroluminescent instruments, dynamic radar cruise control, and an available 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. In 2008, Lexus added the IS C hardtop convertible featuring a three-piece aluminum folding roof.

Engine offerings comprised direct-injected V6 units: a 2.5-liter on IS 250 (204 hp) and a 3.5-liter on IS 350 (306 hp), available with RWD or all-wheel drive. For European markets, Lexus introduced its first diesel sedan, the IS 220d with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine. The range culminated with the high-performance IS F sedan equipped with a 416-hp 5.0-liter V8 and an 8-speed Sport Direct-Shift transmission. Facelifts in 2008 and 2010 refreshed the bumpers, grille trim, and headlight clusters.
