Lexus IS I (XE10) gallery (1999–2005)
The first-generation Lexus IS (XE10) debuted in 1999 as a compact sport sedan and SportCross wagon featuring watch-inspired instrument gauges.
The first-generation Lexus IS compact executive sports car (chassis code XE10) launched in Europe in 1999 and North America in 2000. Designed under chief engineer Nobuaki Katayama to directly challenge European sport sedans, it featured short body overhangs, aggressive stance, and clear-lens rear taillights. Inside, the signature element was a unique watch-chronograph-styled instrument cluster featuring metallic gauge surrounds.
Engine choices included the IS 200 with a 2.0-liter 1GF-FE inline-six delivering 153 hp, and the IS 300 powered by a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE inline-six producing 215 hp. Gearbox offerings ranged from a six-speed manual to a five-speed E-Shift automatic. In 2001, Lexus introduced the IS 300 SportCross five-door hatchback/wagon variant. A 2003 refresh added smoked headlight bezels, updated alloy wheels, electronic stability control, and refined interior trim options.
