The second-generation Ypsilon introduced a practical five-door layout with cleverly concealed rear door handles.
Unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the second-generation Lancia Ypsilon (Tipo 846) marked a major evolution by transitioning to a five-door hatchback body with hidden rear door handles integrated into the C-pillars. The vehicle was engineered on the FCA Mini platform shared with the Fiat 500 and Panda, featuring a stretched wheelbase for improved cabin usability. The powertrain range encompassed the proven 1.2-litre FIRE four-cylinder, the revolutionary 0.9-litre TwinAir turbocharged two-cylinder engine, and the 1.3-litre Multijet II turbo-diesel. Ecochic bifuel variants powered by LPG or CNG were also offered. In 2020, Lancia introduced a 1.0-litre FireFly three-cylinder Mild Hybrid engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Aside from manual transmissions, a semi-automatic Dualogic gearbox was available on select engines. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Japan, the model was badged as the Chrysler Ypsilon. The vehicle received notable facelifts in 2015 and 2021, which introduced redesigned fascias, lower grilles, and contemporary Uconnect touchscreen infotainment. Following Lancia's restructuring in 2017, the Tipo 846 became the brand's sole product sold exclusively in Italy, where it maintained remarkable sales figures until its retirement in 2024.
