The second generation of the model switched to a front-wheel-drive General Motors platform and was produced in a coupe body style.

The second generation of the Isuzu Impulse debuted in 1990 and was built on a new front-wheel-drive General Motors R-body platform shared with the Isuzu Storm. The car received a swift and streamlined coupe body style featuring improved aerodynamics and a comfortable four-seater interior. The vehicle was equipped with modern 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline engines, including turbocharged versions that delivered excellent acceleration dynamics. The transmission lineup included five-speed manual gearboxes and four-speed automatic transmissions. The primary advantage of the second generation was its signature suspension, tuned by Lotus engineers, which elevated the handling of the front-wheel-drive coupe to a new level. The main sales market for the model was North America, where the car was appreciated for its striking appearance and rich standard equipment level. Due to fierce competition and declining interest in compact sports cars, production ended in 1993 without direct successors.
