The first generation of the Isuzu Bighorn frame SUV was introduced in September 1981 and became a key player in the Japanese market for four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles, known in export markets as the Isuzu Trooper. The vehicle was built on a sturdy ladder-frame platform with dependent rear suspension and independent front suspension. The body lineup expanded over time to include a five-door modification introduced in 1983. Under the hood were 1.95, 2.3, and 2.6-liter gasoline carb engines, as well as 2.2 and 2.8-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesel engines. The transmission included five-speed manual gearboxes and later four-speed automatic gearboxes combined with a part-time four-wheel-drive system. Throughout its production, the model underwent minor updates to improve equipment and interior comfort levels, and it was also sold under numerous subsidiary brands worldwide, including Opel Monterey and Holden Jackaroo.
