About this generation

The revived third-generation Holden Monaro rear-wheel-drive performance coupe that gained worldwide fame and spawned the Pontiac GTO.

In December 2001, Holden resurrected its most legendary nameplate with the third-generation Monaro coupe (V2 series), developed from a sensational 1998 Sydney Motor Show concept car. Built on a heavily modified and stiffened VT/VX platform, the new Monaro was an authentic grand touring sports coupe. Powertrain offerings included the supercharged 3.8-litre Ecotec V6 (CV6) and the formidable 5.7-litre all-aluminium GM Gen III LS1 V8 (CV8) developing between 302 hp and 350 hp, mated to either a Tremec T56 six-speed manual or a four-speed 4L60-E automatic transmission. The Series III and subsequent VZ update in 2004 introduced functional hood scoops, upgraded performance braking packages, and a dual-exhaust system. The modern Monaro became an international sensation, exported to the United States as the Pontiac GTO, to the United Kingdom as the Vauxhall Monaro, and to the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe, before final production wrapped up in 2006.
