Holden Monaro II (HQ/HJ/HX) gallery (1971–1977)
The second generation of the Holden Monaro featuring an all-new chassis, quad-coil suspension, and four-door GTS variants.
The second-generation Holden Monaro arrived in July 1971 with the revolutionary HQ series, representing Holden's most expensive clean-sheet development project. It introduced an entirely new perimeter-frame chassis, all-round coil spring suspension, front disc brakes, and refined grand touring aerodynamics. In addition to the signature pillarless two-door coupe, a four-door Monaro GTS sports sedan was introduced in 1973. The engine range encompassed the 202 (3.3-litre) inline-six, the Australian 253 (4.2-litre) and 308 (5.0-litre) V8s, alongside the 350 (5.7-litre) Chevrolet small-block V8 paired with four-speed manual or Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmissions. The HJ restyle in 1974 brought a bold frontal design with rectangular headlamps. The HX update in 1976 introduced anti-pollution equipment under ADR27A regulations, culminating in the exclusive Monaro LE luxury coupe. The car enjoyed strong sales across Australasia and South Africa before the coupe was retired in 1977.
