The second-generation GMC Terrain debuted at the 2017 North American International Auto Show for the 2018 model year, moving to General Motors' lightweight D2XX global architecture shared with the Chevrolet Equinox. The redesign shed approximately 400 pounds (180 kg) and traded the boxy styling of its predecessor for sculpted, aerodynamic sheet metal, a signature floating roof design, and C-shaped LED lighting signatures. Inside, the conventional gear shifter was replaced by an electronic push-pull button array dubbed Electronic Precision Shift. The powertrain lineup was completely turbocharged: a base 1.5-liter LYX gasoline inline-four (170 hp), a potent 2.0-liter LTG turbo-four (252 hp) paired with a nine-speed 9T50 automatic, and a frugal 1.6-liter LH7 turbo-diesel (137 hp) paired with a six-speed automatic (diesel discontinued after 2019; the 2.0L dropped after 2020). For the 2022 model year, GMC delivered a mid-cycle facelift featuring a bolder front fascia, updated LED lights, wireless smartphone integration, and the debut of the off-road-styled AT4 package. It was produced at GM's San Luis Potosi assembly plant in Mexico.
