About this generation

The fifth-generation S197 Mustang launched the modern retro-futuristic muscle car era on a bespoke chassis.

Introduced for the 2005 model year, the S197 generation was engineered on the dedicated D2C rear-wheel-drive platform. Its design directly echoed the fastback profiles of the late 1960s with a bold front grille and round lamps, initiating a design trend across North America. Available as a coupe and convertible, it retained a live rear axle layout paired with modern occupant safety engineering.

Early variants utilised a 4.0-liter V6 and 4.6-liter V8 engines, before a major powertrain overhaul in 2011 introduced the 305-hp 3.7-liter V6 and the renowned 5.0-liter Coyote V8. High-performance Shelby GT500 models culminated in a 662-horsepower supercharged V8, alongside the track-focused Boss 302, solidifying the S197's standing in modern automotive history. The lasting engineering impact of this generation remains a key benchmark in Ford's global model evolution history.
