The second-generation Mondeo adopted New Edge front design treatments and introduced the ST200 variant.
Released in late 1996, the Mondeo Mk2 represented a substantial aesthetic and mechanical refresh of the CDW27 platform. It introduced bold front styling with a distinctive oval grille and sharp headlamps in line with Ford's New Edge design philosophy. Interior revisions focused on ergonomics, improved HVAC controls, passenger sound insulation, and higher grade upholstery materials.
Suspension refinements addressed ride compliance and high-speed stability across all body formats. Engine options included updated Zetec four-cylinders and the Duratec V6, crowned by the high-performance ST200 model featuring a 205-hp 2.5-liter V6 engine, dual exhausts, stiffened dampers, and leather Recaro sports seats. The lasting engineering impact of this generation remains a key benchmark in Ford's global model evolution history. Known for its dependable mechanical layout, the vehicle built a loyal customer base across diverse driving conditions.
