The first-generation BYD e6 was a pioneer compact battery electric MPV designed for high-mileage commercial service and urban transportation across international markets.
Introduced in 2009, the initial generation of the BYD e6 compact multi-purpose vehicle served as the cornerstone of the company electric vehicle lineup until its retirement in 2021. Featuring a spacious five-door MPV body style, the car emphasized passenger legroom, cargo functionality, and durability. Built upon the early BYD e platform 1.0 architecture, it utilized a unibody construction paired with independent front and rear suspensions tailored for urban passenger carrying. Power was derived from a single permanent magnet electric motor driving the front wheels, producing between 90 kW and 120 kW, controlled via a single-speed fixed-gear transmission. Energy storage relied on proprietary lithium iron phosphate battery packs with capacities of 61 kWh or 80 kWh, enabling driving ranges of up to 400 kilometers on a single charge. The cabin offered a minimalist layout with a centrally mounted digital gauge cluster, automatic climate control, and hard-wearing upholstery designed to endure heavy daily utilization. The first-generation e6 was widely deployed in municipal taxi fleets across Shenzhen, Singapore, London, and Bogota, proving the viability of long-distance commercial electric transport.
