Buick Sail I gallery (2000–2005)
The first generation Buick Sail was a subcompact family car produced by SAIC-GM in China based on the Opel Corsa B platform.
The Buick Sail was introduced in December 2000 and launched commercially across mainland China in 2001 as the first subcompact passenger car marketed under the Buick crest. Manufactured by the SAIC-GM joint venture, the vehicle was based on General Motors proven subcompact front-wheel-drive architecture derived from the European Opel Corsa B. It was specifically re-engineered for Chinese road conditions with a strengthened suspension, revised shock valving, and increased ground clearance. Offered initially as a four-door notchback sedan, the lineup expanded in late 2001 with the popular Sail S-RV five-door station wagon featuring integrated roof rails and rugged body cladding. Power was provided by a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated inline-four engine from the GM Family 1 engine family producing 92 horsepower, paired with either a standard five-speed manual gearbox or an optional four-speed Aisin automatic transmission. In February 2005, following a major styling refresh and GM brand realignment in China, the model was officially transferred to the Chevrolet brand as the Chevrolet Sail.
