The third-generation Buick Riviera (1971–1973) is celebrated as one of the most daring designs of the American personal luxury era, distinguished by its iconic boattail fastback rear styling conceived by Jerry Hirschberg under Bill Mitchell. Riding on a full-perimeter frame derived from the E-body architecture with rear-wheel drive, the Riviera boasted an imposing presence, prominent fender sweeps, and a deeply sculpted rear window. The sole engine offering was the mammoth 455 cu in (7.5-liter) Buick V8 paired with the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. Due to lower compression ratios for unleaded fuel and stricter emissions regulations, power outputs shifted to net ratings ranging between 250 and 315 horsepower. The third generation also pioneered GM's computerized MaxTrac traction control system. Federal bumper mandates in 1973 required heavy-duty impact-absorbing front bumpers, which slightly softened the radical contours of the distinctive boattail rear profile.
