Introduced in 2014, the F82 coupe and F83 convertible marked a historic shift as BMW reorganized its high-performance lineup, establishing the M4 moniker for its iconic two-door models. Departing from the high-revving naturally aspirated V8 of the preceding M3 generations, the M4 debuted a brand-new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged S55 inline-six engine developing 425 horsepower. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic was heavily utilized for the roof panel, driveshaft, and front strut brace to minimize overall curb weight.

Over its production span through 2020, BMW continuously sharpened the platform with Competition packages, the lighter M4 CS, and the track-focused M4 GTS featuring innovative water-injection technology. Available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the F82/F83 established a completely new benchmark for high-performance luxury coupes and high-revving convertibles alike.
