The first-generation Acura 3.5 RL (KA9) executive sedan was produced from 1995 to 2004, succeeding the Acura Legend as the brand's flagship.
Introduced in late 1995 for the 1996 model year, the Acura 3.5 RL (KA9 chassis) succeeded the Legend as the flagship sedan in North America. Built on a front-wheel-drive platform with a longitudinally mounted engine, the 3.5 RL prioritized refined comfort, low NVH levels, and smooth power delivery over aggressive handling. Standard equipment included leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and moonroof. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.
Power was provided by a 3.5-liter C35A SOHC V6 engine producing 210 horsepower (later 225 hp), coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission featuring Grade Logic control. A mid-generation refresh for 1999 introduced updated front end styling, revised suspension geometry, xenon headlights, and side airbags integrated into the front seats. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
