Debuting in 2000 for the 2001 model year, the second-generation Acura CL (YA4/YA5 chassis) shared platform mechanics with the contemporary Acura TL sedan. Featuring aggressive front styling and a refined coupe profile, the cabin featured standard leather upholstery, heated power seats, a Bose audio system, HID headlights, and side-impact airbags. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.

Powertrains were exclusively 3.2-liter V6 engines: the base 3.2 CL produced 225 horsepower from a J32A1 engine, while the performance-focused CL Type S (YA5) utilized a 260-horsepower J32A2 engine paired with sport suspension and 17-inch wheels. Transmissions were initially a 5-speed automatic, with a close-ratio 6-speed manual equipped with a helical limited-slip differential introduced for the Type S in 2003 before production concluded. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
